In the State of California, you must be 18 years old to obtain your commercial driver's license (CDL) permit. Before you can apply for your CDL permit, you must submit a 10 Year History Record Check form (DL 939) if you've previously been licensed; submit a valid Medical Examination Report form (DL 51); self-certify the type of vehicle you will be driving and the type of commerce you will be conducting; and pass a vision test. To apply for a CDL with the California DMV, you will have to take and successfully pass a written knowledge test. When you take your California commercial driver's license test, you will also be required to complete a pre-trip inspection test and an on-road skills test. You can apply for an interstate CDL when you reach 21 years of age.
